On Friday, June 20, the Macon-Bibb Fire Department hosted a Public Safety Event from for children at the Union Baptist Church of Macon Summer Camp to learn firsthand the day-to-day operations of public service. Departments, such as the Department of Public Safety, C.H.A.M.P.S Bibb County Sheriff, Code Enforcement, Community Ambulance, Rescue Helicopter, and Emergency Management were all in attendance.

“We showed them all the aspects of the Fire Department, what we do in a 24-hour shift, what our firefighters encompass when they come to work, how they start out there day,” said Fire Chief Shane Edwards. “We’re showing them the equipment that we use to rescue people, the firefighting equipment, what happens when we go inside house fires, and different tools of the trade we have on our three apparatuses.”

“This is a great event. It is good to show young people all about public safety whether it be the Fire Department, Sheriff’s Office, Code Enforcement, Life Flight helicopters, or EMS,” said Sheriff David Davis. “It’s good to let them know all the different things they can do in public safety. Hopefully, we might start a spark in these kids’ minds to expose them to all the options before them”.

Campers explored Fire Headquarters for the afternoon and got to talk with different agencies at stations inside the bays.

“This was their last field trip for the summer,” said Deborah Stanley, Summer Camp Director. “We hope this will inspire them to be firefighters or deputies when they grow up!”
