Macon – A Macon man pleaded guilty to robbery by sudden snatching Monday and was sentenced to 10 years, four of them in prison.
Jaquize Mcgell Johnson, 25, entered his plea during a hearing in Bibb County Superior Court.
If the case had gone to trial, prosecutor Jonathan Gordon would have presented evidence that Johnson was known to the employees at Flash Foods, 3391 Mercer University Drive, where he’d panhandled outside.
At about 12:35 a.m. Aug. 16, 2017, two employees were counting down a register inside the store when they placed cash on the counter. Johnson, who had walked in and was standing by the counter, grabbed the cash and walked out. Images of the crime were recorded on a store surveillance camera.
Johnson was arrested later that day at the Harrison Road Walmart after a loss prevention officer recognized Johnson from a photo released by authorities.
During his hearing on Monday, a judge additionally revoked Johnson’s probation on two 2010 burglary cases.
Speaking after the hearing, Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke said, “Mr. Johnson snatched money off a counter that he knew didn’t belong to him. Now he has four years to break his pattern of theft or he’ll find himself back in prison.”
