Macon – A 21-year-old man pleaded guilty Tuesday to his part in a July 13, 2016, holdup outside a Macon Starbucks.
Davontae Eugene Cobb, of Macon, pleaded guilty to armed robbery. A Bibb County Superior Court judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years on probation. Cobb must serve the prison portion of his sentence without the possibility of parole.
If the case had gone to trial, Prosecutor Sandra Matson would have presented evidence showing:
Two employees were sitting on the patio outside the Starbucks on Tom Hill Sr. Boulevard not long after closing time when they noticed a car driving slow in the parking lot. Shortly thereafter, two men wearing sunglasses and black bandanas over their faces approached the employees and demanded money from them at gunpoint.
The bandits took about $20 in tip money from one of the employees.
An investigation revealed Cobb was driving the car.
Another man, 18-year-old Malik Antwan Thornton, pleaded guilty in December to armed robbery for his part in the heist. Thornton also was sentenced to 20 years, 10 of them in prison.
Cases against two other men charged in the robbery still are pending in Bibb County Superior Court.
Speaking after the plea, Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke said, “Mr. Cobb is going to prison for taking $20, what amounts to gas money. Anyone who helps commit a violent crime — whether as a driver or a lookout — is just as guilty as those who hold a gun.”
