Macon – An 18-year-old Macon man pleaded guilty Tuesday afternoon to his part in a July 13, 2016, holdup outside a Macon Starbucks.
Malik Antwan Thornton pleaded guilty to armed robbery and a Bibb County Superior Court Judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years on probation.
If the case had gone to trial, evidence would have shown that two employees were sitting on the patio outside the Starbucks on Tom Hill Sr. Boulevard not long after closing time when they noticed a car driving slow in the parking lot. Shortly thereafter, two men wearing sunglasses and black bandanas over their faces approached the employees and demanded money from them at gunpoint.
Cases against three other men charged in the robbery still are pending in Bibb County Superior Court. Thornton was 17 when he was arrested in August 2016.
Speaking after the plea, Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke said,
“Mr. Thornton is not facing a lifetime in prison because he is owning up to what he did. Any young person who considers doing something like this should also consider that they could be facing a lifetime behind bars.”
