Macon – Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke announced Tuesday his office’s donation of $52,000 as seed money for The Family Counseling Center of Central Georgia’s 2018-2019 fundraising drive.
Established by the Junior League of Macon and United Way of Central Georgia in 1957, The Family Counseling Center is a non-profit agency that provides free and reduced cost services to Middle Georgia families in need.
“The Family Counseling Center provides invaluable services to crime victims, helping them rebuild their lives. In addition to seeking justice, it’s prosecutors’ duty to help victims heal,” Cooke said. “With our donation, it’s my hope that many Middle Georgia families will get the help they need for many years to come.”
Additionally, the District Attorney’s Office will be matching the $7,227 The Family Counseling Center raised at their second annual Sporting Clay Tournament fundraiser on Saturday.
Since 2015, the District Attorney’s Office has donated more than $445,000 in money forfeited by criminals to victim services providers.
Between July 2017 and June 2018, The Family Counseling Center served 340 crime victims in Bibb, Crawford and Peach counties.
In addition to helping crime victims, The Family Counseling Center also provides family counseling, adoption counseling, mental health consulting for Macon-Bibb County’s Head Start program and employee assistance services for a number of local companies including GEICO and Robins Air Force Base.
In recent months, the Center has experienced a cash-flow shortage due to grant funding delays and a reduction in established funding streams.
“While the Family Counseling Center’s staff does an excellent job providing counseling, the Center must find new ways to be self-sustaining,” Cooke said. “I hope that other businesses and individuals will donate to the Center to ensure its continued ability to provide free and low-cost services.”
It’s estimated that 95 percent of the people who receive help from The Family Counseling Center cannot afford the services they receive.
