Students in the Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS) got a first-hand look at how our Fire Department operates and what it takes to keep our community safe. For their first trip of the new year students visited Station #2 to hear from Fire Safety Education Officer Jeremy Webb.  

“We enjoy teaching our youth about the importance of fire safety and giving them some insight on what our department does,” said Fire Chief Shane Edwards. “These student leaders were eager to learn and asked great questions. You can tell they have bright futures ahead of them.”  

Students learned about the trucks and equipment firefighters use and how each station works and responds to fires and emergencies. They also learned about the gear they wear to keep them safe in fires and what to do in case of a fire in their homes.  

Each month students take a field trip to learn how different agencies and department within our government work. Since the start of this new class, students have visited the Board of Elections Office and Irving Tissue to learn about the Industrial Authority. During their orientation, they got to hear from several department heads including Lake Tobesofkee, Engineering, Recreation, Office of Small Business Affairs, Finance, and more.
