The month of July is Uterine Fibroids Awareness Month in Macon-Bibb and throughout the country. Mayor Lester Miller presented a proclamation to Atrium Health Navicent to spread awareness.

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors or growths within the uterus. They are the most common non-cancerous tumors in women of childbearing age, it’s estimated about 65% of women have fibroids by the time they turn 65, and in African American women, that number is 70 percent.

The goal of this proclamation and awareness month is to inform women that they don’t have to live with painful symptoms of fibroids and to encourage women to talk to their doctors about their symptoms and regular gynecological exams are effective in detecting fibroids early when they can be better treated.
