At Tuesday night’s Commission Meeting, Mayor Lester Miller presented a proclamation to James Thigpen who participated in the Special Olympics World Games. Thigpen and his team were one of two sailing teams chosen from the United States who traveled to Berlin, Germany in June to participate.

Thigpen’s team sailed against 42 other teams from around the world and placed third in the race, bringing a bronze medal back to Macon.

“Germany was fun, because I met a lot of people that I hadn’t met before and the food was good,” said Thigpen. “Even when we tipped the boat over, the water felt good.”

Thigpen has been sailboat racing for more 20 years with his partner and trainer Phil Martin. Together, they have competed throughout the southeast including Charleston, South Carolina. You can read the full proclamation here.
