Volunteers needed at Brookdale Resource Center

The Brookdale Resource Center is counting on our community to show up and volunteer. Volunteers are needed for serving meals, sorting donations, and organizing the clothing closet.

According to the Center’s Interim Director Alison Bender, they especially needs people to come out and serve meals on the weekends. If you would like to serve meals, click here. They are also in need of a couple of vacuums, a copier, new pillows, and full body towels. Donations can be dropped off at 3600 Brookdale Avenue on weekdays between 9:00 a.m. to and 4:00 p.m.

“Brookdale would not be the success it is without the support of hundreds of volunteers, the thousands of donations, and the community partnerships since January,” said Bender. “With these donations, our guests’ stay feels more like home than a shelter and relieves their daily stress. They don’t have to worry about what they don’t have.”

The Center has mainly been running because of volunteers and donations from our community since it first opened its doors in January 2021. Since then, 600 people have been stayed and benefited from the Center. So far, the Center has made 45 housing placements, has placed 100 people in jobs, and assisted more than 400 people in getting ID’s, birth certificates, government benefits, and needed medical care. The Center provides guests with three meals a day, shower facilities, and sleeping quarters. Additional resources such as mental health evaluations, educational support, and legal help are also provided for guests.

Since it opened, the Center has been overseen by the Emergency Management Agency, the local expert in emergency shelter operations and coordination.  In July, United Way of Central Georgia agreed to take over operations at the Center to make it a permanent solution to help people experiencing homelessness and those families without adequate resources. United Way will also coordinate support, services, resources, and donations. For more information about that, click here.
