Storm Scoop: Shelter in Place

Do you know where to go if a severe storm comes your way? If you don’t, it’s time to start thinking about your shelter in place location. It’s the location in your home that you and everyone in your house can go to stay safe.

You want to find a place in your home that has as few windows and doors as possible and in the central portion of your house. An area with water, such as a bathroom or bedroom, is desirable.

“What we don’t want is to you leave your home in the middle of storm and drive out looking for a safe place,” said Emergency Management Agency Director Spencer Hawkins.

If you live in a mobile or manufactured home, identify a place with a family member or friend that you can stay with, in case your area comes under a tornado watch or warning.

You can stay informed by signing up for MBCAlert, our emergency notification system. We will send you alerts on your phone or email with information on severe weather and what you need to do to stay safe.
