Macon – Three years ago, Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Jimmy Culver Jr. put his name on the waiting list to attend the National Forensic Academy. The highly sought-after training for crime scene technicians takes place at the University of Tennessee, home of The Body Farm.
After hearing that Culver was at risk of losing his spot in line last month due to budget cuts, the District Attorney’s Office agreed to pay his way using $13,050 in funds forfeited as the result of criminal activity.
“This valuable training will give Cpl. Culver skills to better investigate crime scenes, which ultimately increases our chances of getting justice in court.,” District Attorney David Cooke said.
Culver, a 12-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, has been a crime scene technician since 2014.
As part of a 10-week course, Culver will receive training in investigating death scenes, crime scene photography and mapping, shooting scene reconstruction, digital forensics, arson investigation, fingerprint analysis, courtroom testimony and other skills.
Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said, “The instruction that Investigator Culver will receive at the National Forensics Academy represents the gold standard in crime scene training. The knowledge he will have once this course is complete will help the sheriff’s office to have a staff member with in-depth forensics skills possessed by state and federal forensics investigators. We are very grateful to DA David Cooke for making funds available from his office to provide for this priceless training.”
